Genre-bending is the new normal, and artists like Rina Sawayama and The 1975 are getting in on the action. Both of these artists have dropped albums in 2020 with sounds distinctly their own, while simultaneously blurring the lines between pop, rock, experimental, and even metal (in Sawayama’s case). You can even see this trend in artists like Billie Eilish’s 2019 debut album, which, despite its massive radio play and commercial success, also really didn’t sound like the typical pop music from adjacent artists.
Sydney natives DMA’S, who have found their niche in alternative pop music with arena-ready choruses and catchy melodies, have also switched up their sound with their newest single, “Learning Alive,” which dropped this week. It comes ahead of their next album, The Glow, out July 10.
DMA’s, comprised of Tommy O’Dell, Matt Mason and Johnny Took, formed their band back in Sydney and released an impressive debut EP in 2014. Their debut album, Hills End, found success in Australia’s music scene and resulted in the group earning three ARIA Music Award nominations for “Best Group,” “Best Rock Album,” and “Best Independent Release.”
Though “Learning Alive” is a heartfelt ballad and builds very much like a John Lennon song, it’s infused with more contemporary sounds reminiscent of artists like Lime Cordiale and Chicago Haze favorite Middle Kids. The release of “Learning Alive” is accompanied by a brand new music video, which features behind the scenes footage of the band’s recent UK tour.
The Glow was produced and mixed by Grammy-award winning producer Stuart Price, who has worked with the likes of The Killers and Madonna. The album is now available to pre-order and features exclusive merchandise bundles, signed prints, and limited edition vinyl and cassettes.
