Holly Humberstone is Back with “Die Happy,” Her First New Single in Nearly Two Years

British singer-songwriter Holly Humberstone is back with her first original single of the year with “Die Happy,” a gothic, dark fairytale about falling in love with the right person at the right time.

Dropping today with an accompanied visualizer directed by Silken Weinberg (Ethel Cain), “Die Happy” is quintessentially Holly, with a bit more “umph.” Pulling from the dark aesthetics from some of 2025’s biggest pop culture moments (My mind immediately went to Nosferatu, more on that later), the visual showcases Holly on a bed of clouds, opening with text on screen saying “So It Starts With A Girl…” with Holly donning a white dress, standing only halfway to play guitar during the second chorus before sitting back down for a final zoom in, text on screen saying “Die Happy” and “To be continued…”

Of the song, Humberstone recalls, “I wrote ‘Die Happy’ thinking about a fairytale at night, somewhere between driving fast with the windows down and wandering through a crumbling old house. I took inspiration from The Bloody Chamber and Dracula and I wanted to show the feeling of throwing yourself into love fully and recklessly. There is danger in love.”

“So hit the gas, I want it fast, want it reckless / Now that all that matters is your name on my necklace / and if we crash and kiss the dash maybe tragically / To die with you is to die happy”

Just from that quote alone, you can understand that Humberstone’s perspective as an artist is strong: I came up with my own conclusion about the call-out to films like Nosferatu being woven into the song and the visual before I even read her quote calling out Dracula. And this isn’t a surprise to me at all, the team at Staged Haze has been writing about Humberstone for several years now, including “Vanilla” being one of my personal favorite songs of 2020 and as well a review of her debut album Paint My Bedroom Black back in 2023.

Humberstone has been touring the world quite extensively over the last several years, performing at major festivals like Coachella, Glastonbury, and Wembley Stadium (where she opened for Taylor Swift on The Eras Tour in August of 2024. Just last month, Humberstone held an exclusive listening party in LA for fans to hear her new music, and she’ll likely play some more unreleased music later this month during her time opening for Sam Fender in Australia.

“Die Happy” is out now.
