The Best Five Songs Released This Past Week Pt. 49

Happy Sunday! I’m taking over this week while Kristin’s at Coachella.

Noteworthy album & EP releases:

Gifts from the Holy Ghost, Dorothy
Skinty Fia, Fontaines D.C.
Giving the World Away, Hatchie
Omnium Gatherum, King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard
To Believe – EP, Louis The Child
Everything Was Beautiful, Spiritualized

In chronological order:

“Riptide” – The Chainsmokers
Release Date – April 22

I’ve been hyper critical of most Chainsmokers antics since Memories, Do Not Open, but I have to say— I’m pleasantly surprised by their new direction. “Ipad” and “High” accompany “Riptide” as a three pack. “Riptide”—the latest installment— practically erased any doubts I had with the formerly monumental electronic group. Perhaps they’ve shaken free from the colossal pressure that launched them sky-high without a parachute. While a step in the right direction, the duo is still lacking on the vocal front, but their production value is the highest it’s been in a long time. I’ll have to keep an ear out for their inevitable next album.

“A Beautiful Life” – Dorothy
Release Date – April 22

I haven’t accidentally stumbled on a universally underrated banger in quite some time, so “A Beautiful Life” is welcomed with open arms. This rock meets country, Kelly Clarkson meets Avril Lavigne and Lady Gaga mash-up is simply glorious. I know what you’re thinking—that’s some star-studded company to associate with. And it is. And it’s entirely justified. Do yourself a favor, make your own day by blasting Dorothy’s Gifts from the Ghost—but specifically “A Beautiful Life” right now. Energy boost guaranteed.

“Big Shot” – Fontaines D.C.
Release Date – April 22

This track opens with a grungy rock feel that immediately dissipates into a more atmospheric, distanced approach. Grian Chatten’s voice floats effortlessly at center, while the slow guitar and drum progression lingers just far enough. This is a textbook example of a feel-good chiller; Fontaines D.C. knows what they’re doing with this one. If you’re digging what you hear, Skinty Fia is out on streaming platforms now.

“The Rhythm” – Hatchie
Release Date – April 22

There were plenty of bangers on Giving the World Away, but “The Rhythm” was the ultimate showstopper—at least from the new tracks that were released on April 22. Three teasers built momentum for a powerfully memorable experience. I’m surprised to learn that Hatchie has a relatively niche following with just over 200,000 listeners a month (Spotify). Hopefully, Giving the World Away launches Hatchie into a greater spotlight. For now, I’m going to continue spinning this recent release whenever possible.

“Talk” (With Royal & The Serpent) – Louis The Child
Release Date – April 22

An effortless give-and-take emerges on this remix, as Royal & The Serpent’s vocals meet a breezy and bop-worthy beat. This track encompasses everything that’s right with the electronic music scene. This track was teased by Louis the Child at Coachella where fans fell in love. The message is simple and the beat is straightforward–and it works. Complexity does not always result in astonishing work. Let this pair whisk you away to some easy listening and greater times ahead.
