Nashville Artist brother bird Reluctantly Embraces Change on New Single “state of mind”

Singer-songwriter Caroline Glaser, better known as the project brother bird, has released her newest single, “state of mind” ahead of sophomore album another year, which drops on March 8.

The Nashville-based artist is best known for her intimate take on indie rock, twinged with a bit of country and folk. After a stint on the 4th season of NBC’s The Voice, Glaser developed the artist project brother bird, collaborating with Andy Hull and Robert McDowell of Manchester Orchestra, who helped create her debut album gardens, which dropped in 2021.

If there’s any theme to pick up on in brother bird’s music, it’s the feeling of existential dread. The anxiety that attempts to keep us from pursuing what we want to do, and the moments of “waiting for something to happen,” described in a recent press release.

“state of mind” wastes absolutely no time getting into the weeds when it comes to dealing with feeling void of purpose: the first lines of the song, which was written by Glaser and Luke Sital-Singh, quickly dive into the meaning of “state of mind.”

I’m always waiting / For something more / Is feeling fine just a wasted life? / Oh, I’m always bored / Can we just be honest?

“state of mind” was written back in 2022 and has taken on “a million different meanings” to the artist, and how she has “spent the last decade feeling pretty out of place.” In spite of these feelings, Glaser likes to look at the song as an ode to self-acceptance: “a reminder to always strive towards beauty and love and acceptance.”

Co-produced by Owen Lewis, known for his work with artists like Michal Leah, Peter Raffoul, and Old Sea Brigade, “state of mind” and the rest of another year tackles themes of imposter syndrome, self-doubt, and of course: lots of existentialism.

I think it’s hilarious to put that much effort into an album with a common theme of wishing that I could do anything else. But this, unfortunately, feels like what I’m supposed to do and what I’m here to do,” Caroline said in the same press release.

state of mind” is out now.
