Hunter Daily Falls in Love With Manic Pixie Dream Girl in New Single “Girl Friend”

The manic pixie dream girl trope, popularized in movies like Garden State and 500 Days of Summer, is alive and thriving in Hunter Daily’s newest dreamy single, “Girl Friend.” But Daily digs in deeper in her song about falling in love with a friend, versus the popularized stock character type.

Daily, a Los Angeles-based singer, released her new single today, the singer’s first follow up to her 2023 debut EP, Die in LA.

Throughout the song, Daily confronts feelings about a friend who may or may not have them back. She also sings about a longing feeling for this friend throughout the song’s chorus, about how the titular girl friend is “not my girlfriend, but she’s stuck in my head. She’s kind of perfect, the kind of perfect that the boys never get.” Just like all manic pixie dream girls, Daily sings about the girl friend in the song from a perspective that makes her sound almost imaginary by saying that she’s “stuck in my head” and in the lyric “We’re not that close, so I’m holding my tongue.”

Daily has a super-sweet, melodic voice, which is accompanied by breezy, acoustic guitars that make you feel like you’re sitting at a beach. It’s a perfect song for summer, and I’m sure it will be a hit for anyone who has a summer crush that they can’t stop thinking about.

“Girl Friend” is out now.
