Chatting with Georgia-native Willow Avalon About Debut EP ‘Stranger’

Willow Avalon, hailing from rural Georgia, encapsulates the essence of an old soul. Leaving home at 15 to pursue her musical and storytelling dreams, the 25-year-old artist presents her debut EP, aptly titled Stranger, out today.

Engaging in a conversation with Willow feels like reconnecting with an old friend, as her instantly familiar nature shines through. In a recent phone interview, Willow shared her emotions about releasing the finished product, her comfort in the bustling city of NYC, and even divulged some favorite spots throughout the city.

Timing appears to be on Willow’s side, with her TikTok fame gaining momentum. A recent demo video, “Gettin’ Rich, Goin’ Broke,” went viral and has been added to the EP as the first track. Willow expresses excitement about achieving success to provide her family with the comforts they deserve.

The previously released singles “Honey Ain’t No Sweeter” and “Stranger” showcase Willow’s delicate, folky voice harmonizing seamlessly with strings, creating an upbeat and sweet melody.

This collection of songs holds deep personal significance for Willow. Some tracks have been companions on her journey for a while, while others are newer creations. She expresses, “This group of songs means so much to me because some of them have been with me for a while and some are newer. Whenever I’ve put something out, it’s been unmixed or unmastered; there’s always something I had to explain. I’m so excited to put out this body of work and for these songs to be out in the world.”

Willow’s musical alchemy seamlessly merges pop and country influences, drawing comparisons to acclaimed artists like Kacey Musgraves and First Aid Kit. Her sound possesses a Bruce Springsteen quality—a classic resonance that harmonizes with narratives, breathing life into each lyric.

While Willow draws inspiration primarily from her personal stories, the track “The News” explores broader political themes. It’s a departure from her usual narratives, written from a perspective contemplating societal shifts and expressing hopeful wishes for change. “I wrote that song about the way that things are going on in the world and what I wish would happen,” she says.

The EP gracefully concludes with “Drivin,” evoking echoes of Fleetwood Mac, and other tracks like “Call Me On My Way Home,” creating an auditory tapestry perfectly suited for the liberating expanse of the open road. Willow Avalon’s “Stranger” stands as a rich tapestry, woven with threads of personal stories, diverse influences, and a spectrum of emotions. This debut promises not just authenticity but also heralds promising musical craftsmanship from an artist who has crafted a resonant introduction to her artistry.

Having moved to New York two years ago, Willow finds the city’s energy a perfect match for her. Despite growing up in a rural setting, the transition wasn’t as significant as expected. “The city is so amazing; I have really bad ADHD. There’s always so much here. It’s like you wake up, and there’s such bustling energy, and you’re forced to be thrown in, and nobody gives a damn what you’re doing. You can be in your world and do what you need to do; it’s so free here, it’s like the Wild West with skyscrapers!

For Willow, this is just the beginning. Following the release of her first EP (and not her last, as she confesses she’s constantly writing), she embarks on a tour for the first time, opening for Briston Maroney. Despite having traversed places like Los Angeles, Oregon, Seattle, and Marfa, Texas, she admits to nervousness about the tour. “I have not traveled as much as it seems! I don’t have a passport. I’ve never been on a tour, and it’s pretty scary, but I love Briston, I’ve known him for a minute, and my band is made up of my friends. Everyone knows everyone, so I’m very excited.”

Wrapping up our chat, Willow spills the beans on her go-to spots in New York like Lavagna and The Elk (she does not gatekeep!). Her love for the city’s vibes is as clear as her passion for music. Her excitement is contagious, as I’m eager to see where Willow Avalon’s career takes her next.

Stranger is out now.
