Maggie Rogers Continues Her Enduring Legacy with New Album ‘Don’t Forget Me’

Maggie Rogers‘ musical journey has been nothing short of spectacular, from her serendipitous encounter with Pharrell Williams that catapulted her into the spotlight to the release of her debut album Heard It In a Past Life. Now, with her latest offering Don’t Forget Me, Rogers invites us into a world of nostalgia, introspection, and musical evolution.

The journey leading to Don’t Forget Me began with Rogers’ introspective debut, followed by her thorough exploration of her demos and past projects in Notes from the Archive. Her preceding album, Surrender, highlighted her prowess in rock music as she collaborated with Kid Harpoon. Moreover, Rogers has delved into spirituality and explored the ethics of power in pop culture during her studies at Harvard Divinity School. This rich foundation sets the stage for an album that goes beyond mere songs, weaving a narrative from Rogers’ personal experiences, influences, and artistic evolution.

Collaborating for the first time with Ian Fitchuk, whose work with Kacey Musgraves has garnered critical acclaim, Rogers crafts a sound that is both timeless and contemporary. The album is peppered with personal touches, from voicemails to the playful mention of her own name in lines like “Maggie slow your roll,” adding a layer of intimacy to the listening experience.

Rogers’ vision for Don’t Forget Me is clear in her own words: she wanted to create an album that felt like a “Sunday afternoon,” evoking images of comfort, nostalgia, and classic charm. This sentiment permeates every track, creating a cohesive journey that feels like coming home. She delves into personal and fictional narratives, drawing from memories of college and pivotal moments from different ages. She explains in a press release, “In writing the album sequentially, at some point, a character emerged. I started to picture a girl on a road trip through the American south and west. A sort of younger Thelma & Louise character who was leaving home and leaving a relationship, processing out loud, finding solace in her friends and in the promise of a new city and new landscape. I tried to capture her life with the intimacy of Linda McCartney’s photographs, spontaneous and open and free. She’s starting over, turning the page on a new chapter in her life.”

The album’s creation story is as intriguing as its sound. Written over five days in December 2022 and January 2023, each song was crafted with care and intention, resulting in a collection that flows seamlessly from start to finish. Rogers’ personal stories and imaginative tales blend seamlessly, reflecting the deepest truths about her present and the intimate journey she shares with listeners.

From the opening track “It Was Coming All Along,” with its cinematic strings reminiscent of a Cranberries song, to the melodic introspection of “I Still Do” and the country-tinged nostalgia of “Never Going Home,” Rogers explores a range of emotions and genres with finesse. Standout moments on the album include “Drunk,” where Rogers’ vocals shine against a backdrop of 80s-inspired elements, and “The Kill,” which employs horns reminiscent of Peter Gabriel or Tears for Fears, showcasing Rogers’ versatility and musicality. Tracks like “On & On & On” and “All the Same” channel the spirit of ’90s indie rock/pop, with catchy melodies and heartfelt lyrics that resonate long after the music fades.

The album culminates with the title track and lead single “Don’t Forget Me,” bringing the journey full circle and leaving a lasting impression. It’s a testament to Rogers’ artistry and dedication, solidifying her as a musician, artist, and songwriter of remarkable depth and talent.

Don’t Forget Me is not just an album; it’s a testament to Maggie Rogers’ musical evolution and a captivating journey through time, melody, and emotion. It’s an album you won’t forget, just as Maggie herself has solidified her place as a musical force to be reckoned with.

Don’t Forget Me drops tomorrow.
