Youth Large Drops Heartfelt Single “Warn Me, Hold Me” Today with Toadstool Records

Today is a big day for Em Margey and their solo project, Youth Large. The much-anticipated single and video, “Warn Me, Hold Me,” are out now, and they’re a must-listen. I recently had the chance to chat with Em on a lovely Monday in Madison Square Park about this exciting new release, their partnership with Toadstool Records, and what’s on the horizon.

For those who might be new to Youth Large, Em has been making music for years under different names and styles, but this latest single marks a significant new step in their artistic journey. The track, produced by Charlie White, is a deeply personal and raw reflection on the bittersweet experience of watching a friend move on while you remain. Em’s voice, just above a whisper, is accompanied by a steady drum beat and a poignant guitar solo that crescendos into an emotional high.

The accompanying video, directed and edited by Em, takes a playful yet poignant approach. Shot in a Brooklyn skate park, the black-and-white video features Em and a mustached stunt double, adding a humorous touch to the otherwise somber song. It’s a clever nod to New York’s skate culture and adds a unique visual layer to the music.

When I asked Em about the inspiration behind “Warn Me, Hold Me,” they shared that the song was born just before their co-worker’s last shift. “It’s about a friendship that really impacted me,” Em explains. “The song serves as a tribute to those memories and a hope that they’ll continue to shine even after that person is gone.”

Creating this track was a special process for Em. “I wrote it all in one sitting,” they say. “It’s a simple song with a basic guitar part. Charlie encouraged me to use my own guitar solo instead of relying on friends, which was new for me.” The simplicity of the production allowed the emotional depth of the song to shine through. Em even recorded the guitar solo using GarageBand, sticking with the setup that felt most authentic.

The video was an idea that came together fairly last-minute. “I originally had a different concept, but time was running out,” Em recalls. “A joke about using a skater as a stunt double turned into a real idea.” Despite some emotional hurdles during filming, including a genuine moment where Em ended up crying, the final result captures a heartfelt and authentic vibe.

Signing with Toadstool Records has been an exciting development for Em. “I was looking for a label that matched my DIY values,” they say. “Toadstool really resonated with me because they’re all about supporting artists and fostering a community.” The label has been involved in meaningful projects this year, such as a benefit compilation for The Freedom Theatre and a solar eclipse show.

Em’s transition from their previous project name, Emma Blue Jeans, to Youth Large represents a significant evolution in their music. “Youth Large feels more aligned with where I am now,” Em explains. “It’s about vulnerability and change, which reflects my current approach to music.

Looking forward, Em is gearing up for a major show on November 17th. “It’s going to be a special event in a private loft in Greenpoint,” they hint. “I’m excited about the special guests and the DIY spirit of the night.” Em’s live performances are deeply personal, drawing from their background in acting to convey the emotional essence of their songs.

As our conversation wrapped up, Em shared their hope for “Warn Me, Hold Me”: “I want listeners to understand that even when something ends, its impact and light can still linger.” With this new release, Em continues to push their creative boundaries and connect with audiences on a profound level.

So, if you haven’t already, dive into “Warn Me, Hold Me” today. The single and video are out now, and they offer a powerful glimpse into Em Margey’s evolving musical journey. Keep an eye out for more from Youth Large as they continue to make waves in the music world.
