If there’s one word to describe Jeni Magaña, the musician behind the solo project Magana, it’s busy. Last March, Magana released her second LP, Teeth, and followed that up in October with Dreams, a multimedia project which combined electronic music with her spoken word dream diary and a book of her photography. Now, she’s releasing her third project within a 10-month span, her new EP, Bad News, which dropped today.
The EP has been described as winter pop and evocative of a cozy feeling, but just because it feels cozy doesn’t mean it’s always pleasant. Magana is an impressive songwriter, and is able to capture a tremendous amount of feeling in her honest lyrics, especially in the standout track “Shower Song.”
In the song, Magana sings about a doomed and depressing relationship in the lyrics “And I don’t want to make love anymore, because you feel like a stranger and I feel like a bore. I don’t want to talk shit out no more, because you’re a rearranger, and I’m a broken door. I don’t want to do this anymore.”
It’s not all heartbreak, though. There’s fun instrumentation that runs through the EP’s opening track, “Half to Death,” and helps contribute to the cozy feeling that Magana is putting together on “Bad News.”
In addition to her own solo work, Magana is also known as Mitski’s bassist and backup vocalist, and as half of the pop duo Pen Pin. Last year was the first time that the musician has stepped back into releasing work under the name Magana, after taking a three-year break from her solo project. The immense amount of productivity that the musician has had after the three-year break showcases an immense amount of creativity that was waiting to be utilized, and it’ll be exciting to see if Magana continues her busy streak, or takes a well-deserved break.
Bad News is out now.
