When Shygirl first announced Club Shy Room 2, she proclaimed it was “just a little something to keep the party going.” The London-born singer, rapper, songwriter, DJ, and co-founder of the record label and collective Nuxxe released the six-track EP this past Friday, the follow up to her critically acclaimed EP Club Shy from last year.
The EP is an international collaboration of party-girl bops, just shy of 15 minutes, with the vast majority of the tracks being singles. It contains scraps from 2020 recording sessions, fusing R&B with experimental pop, garage, grime, and reggaeton. Listeners are introduced with “Je M’appelle” (“my name is” or “I call myself” in French,) the only non-single and non collaboration on the album where Shygirl announces herself and invites listeners into her world: “You can come and get lit /Call me by my name / I’m the motherfucking best, bitch.”
“Immaculate,” the lead single of the project, is a mid-tempo track featuring rapper Saweetie. “Flex” is a grime-inspired track with BAMBII, produced with Oscar Scheller and Blue May. A standout is “F*me,” a nasty dance track with a Yseult feature and with Mura Musa on production. The most pop-forward track is a collaboration with Jorja Smith and Sadboi, “Wifey Riddim.” A personal favorite is the dancehall “True Religion,” which features Honduran artist Isabella Lovestory and PinkPantheress with production by Oscar Scheller and Nick León.
Shygirl told W Magazine “I made Club Shy Room 2 as a thank you, and to say: I’m still going to party with you guys.” The promise to keep the party going, a promise kept.
