HAIM Kicks off the Unofficial Start of Spring with Funky, Breezy New Single “Relationships”

In new single “Relationships,” Los Angeles natives HAIM welcome spring with a funky, breezy single. In addition to the sound, the single’s art embodies the feeling of early spring. In it, the trio’s faces are tilted up to meet the sun, the album art subtly referencing the iconic paparazzi pictures of Nicole Kidman post Tom Cruise divorce and including the walking that has become HAIM cannon.

“Relationships” is HAIM’s first in three years, (since 2022’s “Lost Track”) and the first glimpse at the band’s forthcoming album, release date not yet announced. The track was co-produced by Danielle Haim and Rostam Batmanglij, a founding member of Vampire Weekend who produced HAIMs’ most recent album, 2020’s Women in Music Pt. III. The cheery nature of the production is in contrast to the song’s lyrics, which question the purpose of romantic relationships. There is a fun vocal sample that floats throughout, a cheerful echo “goes, goes like, goes like” that accompanies the persistent questioning of romance, “is it just the shit our parents did/ And had to live with it?”

The song dropped with a music video directed by Camille Summers-Valli, beginning with the disbelief of a breakup scene. The HAIM sisters pack a car following a breakup while the heartthrob Drew Starkey, (Queer, Outer Banks) who plays the love interest to Danielle, appears to be in disbelief.

There is then a rewind to the couple in relationship: a dance floor make out, lounging in various stages of undress on the floor, a distant bed sharing. “How did we get ourselves into this?” Danielle bellows on the bridge. The video ends with a backtracking, the boxes being pulled out of the car: a renewal, the song ultimate deciding that love is worth trying again.
