After a decades-long career in the music industry, Zac Farro is finally branching out under his own name with the release of Operator, a studio album that will be released next month.
Even though his name might not be familiar to those who are unaware of his other-named contributions, Farro is no stranger to the music business. The musician started playing drums at age 9, and five years later co-founded a little band you might have heard of called Paramore. He left the band in 2010, and after a six year break, rejoined for Paramore’s 2017 album After Laughter.
In the meantime, he’s also released five studio albums and three EPs under the name HalfNoise, including 2023’s City Talk. HalfNoise functioned as a duo for two years, but since 2012 has served as a solo project for Farro, alongside touring members.
Operator will be Farro’s first release under his own name. It will also capture a different sound than Farro’s previous work. The album’s first single, “My My,” is a country and folk-inspired song that tackles pretty heavy topics.
The heartbreaking song, which dropped today, is about dealing with an ill family member. Farro described the song as personal, and said that it’s about the silent pain of letting go of someone.
The song is also about anxiety, and communication breakdowns, especially when going through difficult times. These are themes that continue to run throughout Operator.
It’s also a quintessentially Nashville album without being too showy about it. From its country influences, to the close friends that Farro worked with to produce the album—Josh Gilligan and Chancey Pierce, who are big in the city’s music scene.
The album is being released through Congrats Records, a record label that was founded by Farro.
Operator will be available July 18.
