The Moss Waits for the Light on New Single ‘”Darkness”

If a relationship seems doomed, or feels like being trapped in darkness, it’s probably for the best to just move on. That’s what Salt Lake City-based band The Moss sings about on their latest single, “Darkness.”

The single, which dropped today, marks the first release for The Moss since the band’s 2024 single, “Alive.”

“Darkness” starts with a mellow verse, filled with repetitive chords on a synth, and a light but steady drumbeat, and lyrics that detail an “infectious,” but not necessarily altogether positive coupling. Despite its chilled-out verses, “Darkness” picks up significantly in tempo and emotion throughout the song’s chorus, as The Moss’ vocalist guitarist Tyke James belts out about a doomed relationship.

“Lately I’m just tired of darkness all the time. I can’t even close my eyes, but I know the sun will rise if I make it through the night,” James sings in the single’s chorus.

Now based in Salt Lake City, James and the band’s guitarist Addison Sharp originally lived in Oahu, and you can pick up the beachy influence in the band’s mellow verses, and infectious bassline.

The song is just a part of the band’s massive year—earlier this year, they spent two months touring throughout the United States (and a show in Canada), alongside opening acts Michigander, Night Cap and Ray and Paul.

The Salt Lake City-based band is performing a hometown show with Mt. Joy at the city’s Library Square on Aug. 12. “Darkness” is available on all streaming platforms.
