You’ve probably never heard of Lucky Horse Red, but there’s a good chance you’ve heard of some of the Los Angeles-based six-piece band, who just released the singles “Noon Moon” and “Whiskey” today.
Comprised of members from various groups, like bassist Keilah Nina, formerly of The Aquadolls, steel guitarist Colin Croom of Twin Peaks and MJ Lenderman’s touring band, guitarist Mark Martino of Babe Ruthless, drummer Mika Rabina of Siam Jem and guitarist Jake Melendez of Thee Azmatics. Lucky Horse Red is like a supergroup of LA-based DIY alternative and punk musicians.
“Noon Moon” and “Whiskey” are the latest singles that the LA-based band has released in support of their upcoming self-titled debut album. Lucky Horse Red is being released Sept. 26.
The band is fronted by model and musician Bunny Gaubert, who steals the show in the single with her unique vocals. At times, Gaubert’s voice sounds like she’s almost yodeling, and can convey powerful emotions, especially in the lyrics “I don’t know how to feel.” It fits in well with the band’s alt-country sound.
Running at a slow pace, with steel guitar prominent throughout the song, it wouldn’t feel out of place to hear this live in somewhere like Texas. But it also wouldn’t feel out of place to hear this song live, after hearing it recorded. The lo-fi, DIY-heavy band captured the song in a unique way while recording their upcoming album at Joshua Tree Recording Studio, where it feels like you’re in the room with them, even if you’re just listening to the song on a laptop at home.
“Noon Moon” and “Whiskey” can be found on all streaming platforms.
