Being in a relationship can be a lot of pressure. Rather than just depending on yourself, there’s another person in your life that becomes a major priority. That can feel like you’re carrying a lot of weight, which is what Canadian singer Katie Tupper sings about on “Right Hand Man,” her latest single, which dropped today.
“I’ll stay the night and pick a fight,” Tupper sings in the groove-heavy track. “24 hours in the day and I can’t give you all of mine.”
“Right Hand Man” is groovy and funky, with ’90s-inspired percussion and plummeting basslines throughout the song that make it instantly danceable and a really fun listen. According to Tupper, the song, which veers heavily toward the singer’s funk influences, is about the weight and pressure that can coincide with being in a relationship.
“I’m becoming your first-hand right-man centerpiece. You’re leaning on me for deep down inner peace. I’m slipping away. The pressure’s making me bleed,” Tupper sings in the song’s first verse.
The single is Tupper’s first off of her debut album, Greyhound, which is due out Jan. 21 on Arts & Crafts Productions, a Toronto-based indie label.
The album isn’t Tupper’s first release—the singer has two EPs under her belt, with 2022’s “Towards the End,” and 2023’s “Where to Find Me,” which resulted in a Juno nomination for the Saskatoon native, for Traditional R&B/Soul Recording of the Year.
