August Ponthier is Sad and Nostalgic on Fantastic New Single, “I’m Crying, Are You?”

Sometimes when you’re heartbroken, it makes it feel a little bit better to know that the other person is, too. That’s the case for indie folk singer August Ponthier on their latest single, “I’m Crying, Are You?” which dropped today.

“Are you always losing it in public too?” Ponthier questions in the single’s infectious and surprisingly fun, despite the subject matter, chorus.

“I’m Crying, Are You?” is the first single off of singer-songwriter August Ponthier’s upcoming debut LP, Everywhere Isn’t Texas, which is set to be released Feb. 13. Although Everywhere Isn’t Texas is the musician’s first album, it isn’t Ponthier’s first release.

Ponthier has released has three EPs in 2021, 2022, and 2024, and has toured with artists like Brandi Carlile, The Japanese House, and NIKI. “I’m Crying, Are You?” is also Ponthier’s first release under their new name: Ponthier came out as nonbinary in an interview with Them, a digital LGBTQ magazine, in Oct. 2025, announcing that the musician uses they/them pronouns and is now going by the name August.

The album is a reflective, soul-searching look into Ponthier’s life, and the single is no different, Ponthier commenting on the album being “a tall tale of where you come from, where you’re going, and who you truly are,” along with the album announcement on Instagram.

“I’m Crying, Are You?” follows Ponthier as the singer reflects on a broken relationship, and the effort to try and repair oneself afterwards.

“I talk to Janet every Wednesday, spent fortunes on my headaches and self-help books,” Ponthier sings in the song’s opening bouncy, fun, pop-infused verse about the efforts to work on oneself after a breakup, referencing buying a bunch of self-help books and speaking to therapists.

The song is sonically breezy and joyful, even if it’s lyrically centered around not really getting over a heartbreak. It’s carried through Ponthier’s gentle acoustic guitar strumming, and adds further instrumentation as it picks up, along with harmonies from Ponthier.

It’s a solid listen, and a good sign of things to come with the musician’s upcoming
release.

“I’m Crying, Are You?” is out now.
