As summer makes its way around the corner, on the east coast I find myself overwhelmed by the amount of music we’ve been blessed with this year alone. In the event that you might be feeling this way too, I’ve done the research and crafted a short list of the albums released this year best suited for the summer season.
Zara Larsson – Midnight Sun: Girls Trip
How do you follow up a critically acclaimed anthemic summer album? Easy, just ask Zara Larsson who follows up her 2025 album Midnight Sun with a subsequent album of sultry, dance-centric remixes titled, Midnight Sun: Girls Trip. Remix albums have come to be some of my favorite bodies of work. It abolishes the “if it ain’t broke don’t fix it mentality” that often falls flat when it comes to art, a medium that can stand perpetual tweaks and re-imaginings. On Girl’s Trip, Zara Larsson maintains her star presence even beside icons like Robyn, Kehlani, Tyla, and more to execute the mission of simply partying with friends but making room for the existential dread that can sometimes impose on a fun night out with the girls.
Honey Dijon – The Nightlife
Following up her last album, 2022’s Black Girl Magic, Honey Dijon exemplifies why she’s one of house music heaviest hitters. My favorite trait of the genre is how malleable it is and how many sub-genres it has spawned since its early formations in Chicago (also Honey Dijon’s birthplace). Because the sound is so flexible, so are the settings suits. Whether you’re splayed across a beach, speeding down the highway letting the summer heat pass through your windows, or cat-walking through the city streets impervious to the smell of hot garbage, your soul will transcend to the dance floor.
Bad Gyal – Mas Cara
I’m probably the first person to ever say this but, for me, reggaeton is synonymous with summer. Alba Farelo i Solé, known to most as reggaetonera Bad Gyal, releases her second full length album, Mas Cara, right in time for the layers to be lost and the sweat beads to start accumulating on your upper lip. The latter does sound sexy, but set to the score of some of the genres landmark producers like Tainy, Sky Rompiendo, Ovy On The Drums, and more, this album is perfect for the hot and heavy months ahead.
Thundercat – Distracted
While I never really had a “victorious” young hoe phase, summer would be the perfect time to indulge in steamy trysts and debaucherous activities. Such is what makes up most of the thesis of Thundercat’s fifth album, Distracted. His soothing high pitched vocals paired with sunny, gossamer production distract the listener from some of the darker moments on the record. One could both find allowance from it to entertain our more nefarious desires or simply daydream to it.
Jordan Ward – Backward
R&B impresario Jordan Ward first hooked me with his versatility and elegance in balancing rapping and singing in a way that felt authentic to the lyrics he was dispensing. While he wasn’t the first one to do it, it still felt so unique and fresh. Backward takes this elegance to it’s highest degree, multiplying it by soul, and dividing it with rhythm (no I’m not good at math, why do you ask?) It might not be the album to rage to but it’s definitely the one to score all the other sweet, sexy, and warm moments summer has to offer.
