Super Group Carrie Okay Makes its Debut with “High in a Drugstore”

Singer-songwriters LØLØ, salem ilese, and Alna have joined forces as Carrie Okay, a new alternative pop-rock supergroup. The trio introduced the project on August 28 with their debut single, “High in a Drugstore.”

Each member arrives with an established musical identity of her own. Toronto singer-songwriter LØLØ is known for confessional pop-rock with a sharp pop-punk edge, while salem ilese broke through with “Mad at Disney” back in 2022 and has written for artists including Bella Poarch, ILLIT, and TOMORROW X TOGETHER. Alna is a Los Angeles-based singer, songwriter, and vocal producer whose credits include Kylie Minogue’s “Kiss Bang Bang” and ILLIT’s “Lucky Girl Syndrome,” as well as her featured performance on ILLENIUM and Tom Grennan’s “Forever.” Together, their backgrounds make Carrie Okay feel like a natural meeting point between pop songwriting and alternative rock.

The three artists initially came together to write “High in a Drugstore” for someone else, but ultimately decided the song was too special to give away. Produced by Andrew Goldstein, who has worked with blink-182, Tate McRae, and 5 Seconds of Summer, the single gives each member a chance to bring her own perspective to the collaboration.

“High in a Drugstore” opens with acoustic guitar before slipping into a bright, catchy pop melody. The song immediately establishes its slightly chaotic premise with the line, “Thought I saw you at Denny’s last night.” From there, Carrie Okay captures the messy ways we sometimes attempt to escape heartbreak, whether that means drinking too much, taking a gummy, or wandering into a convenience store while thinking about an ex.

The chorus is where the song fully comes together. After going out “looking for heaven,” the narrator instead finds herself high in a drugstore, unable to quiet a mind determined to revisit the relationship. It is funny, vulnerable, and self-deprecating, particularly when the trio wonders whether the situation is “poetic, or pathetic.”

“High in a Drugstore” is a solid pop song with a memorable hook and a playful concept that makes an emotional spiral feel worthy of singing along to. While the track introduces the chemistry between LØLØ, salem ilese, and Alna, it also leaves Carrie Okay with plenty of room to continue developing a distinctive identity as a group.
