Australian band GRXCE is back with a brand new banger right in time to make it on your ‘Best of’ playlists before the year comes to a close.
The band’s new single “What U Want” comes after a massive year for the Aussies, whose existence only came to fruition just two years ago. The quartet connected with each other through a Facebook group in 2021 and have since created quite the name for themselves in the Australian music scene, touring across New South Wales and sharing the stage with artists like Lola Scott and Surf Trash.
GRXCE has released a handful of singles this year, with “What U Want” a testament to the band solidifying their place in the alternative landscape. Vocalist and songwriter Jamila Grace speaks on the subject matter of the song in a press release: ‘This is the first time I’ve written from someone else’s perspective. A friend sent me a song he’d written about a date he went on and this one line about the girl asking to take herself home, rather than be driven by someone else really stuck out to me.”
“I almost immediately started writing the juxtaposing perspective to the story, which eventually transformed it from a song about a bad date into a cautionary tale of bad habits and finally being able to put your foot down to someone who isn’t clear about their intentions,” she said.
The sonic elements of “What U Want” draws from the band’s previous releases, relying on the concept of showcasing introspective lyricism with upbeat, edgy production and elements of grunge pop. Produced by ARIA-nominated producer Aidan Hogg, who has worked with the likes of G-Flip and Jaguar Jonze, is credited for pushing the track to the next level:
“This track is equally the most different and most us we’ve sounded in comparison to our other releases. Aidan played a massive role by adding the main synth line that gave the track a much needed face lift – taking it from something we’d maybe release to something we had to get out in the world,” Jamila says.
GRXCE is gearing up for another busy year of touring and are working on the final touches of their debut album, which is set to drop next year. The band hasn’t publicly announced any dates in North America any time soon, but I’ll cross my fingers anyway.
“What U Want” is out now.
