Sasami’s New Single “Just Be Friends” is A Tender Exploration of Letting Go

Sasami Ashworth, known simply as Sasami, has been making waves in the alternative music scene with her genre-bending sound and fearless approach to songwriting over the last few years. The multi-instrumentalist, producer, and singer-songwriter is no stranger to pushing boundaries. Her latest single, “Just Be Friends,” is yet another testament to her ability to explore deeply personal themes while innovating sonically. With a background that spans classical music, indie rock, and metal, Sasami’s music has consistently defied categorization, and this new single is no exception.

Sasami’s journey in music has been as eclectic as her sound. Originally trained in classical French horn, she transitioned from the orchestral world to the indie rock scene, first gaining recognition as the synth player for the band Cherry Glazerr. However, she quickly carved out her own path, launching her solo career with the 2019 self-titled debut album Sasami. The album established her as a unique voice in indie music, blending grunge, shoegaze, and lo-fi elements to create a sound that felt both familiar and refreshingly new. Tracks like “Not the Time” and “Callous” received widespread acclaim for their introspective lyrics and haunting melodies, signaling the arrival of an artist unafraid to share her vulnerabilities.

With her second album, Squeeze, released in 2022, Sasami leaned even further into experimentation, incorporating heavier guitar riffs and elements of metal. Songs like “Say It” and “Make It Right” reveal a raw intensity that captures the aggression and energy often lurking beneath her more introspective songs. Squeeze was bold and confrontational, showing that Sasami could shift effortlessly from the melancholic tones of her debut to a louder, angrier sound without losing her signature emotional depth.

“Just Be Friends” finds Sasami pivoting once again. The single is an exploration of the bittersweet nature of relationships that must end, even when there’s still lingering affection. Rather than taking the angst-driven approach of her previous works, Sasami opts for a softer, almost wistful tone. The track’s instrumentation is minimalistic, allowing her vocals to take center stage. There’s an intimacy here, as if she’s directly addressing someone close to her, making the listener feel as though they’re privy to a personal moment of closure.

While “Just Be Friends” still showcases Sasami’s knack for emotional honesty, it reflects a newfound maturity in her songwriting. The lyrics reveal her acceptance of the complicated nuances in love and friendship, acknowledging that sometimes the most compassionate thing we can do is let go. This theme, coupled with Sasami’s warm, haunting vocals, makes “Just Be Friends” one of her most relatable and grounded songs to date.

What’s compelling about Sasami’s career so far is her constant reinvention. Each of her releases feels like a snapshot of where she is in life and in her musical exploration. “Just Be Friends” fits well into her journey, marking yet another stylistic evolution. Fans of her earlier work might notice a more subdued energy compared to her usual approach, but this change feels natural for an artist who has continually blurred genre boundaries.

With this single, Sasami reminds us that heartbreak and acceptance are universal themes that resonate no matter the sonic backdrop. Whether through distorted guitar riffs or soft melodies, she proves time and time again that she can capture the nuances of complex emotions with a rare sincerity.

Sasami’s fourth studio album Blood On the Silver Screen is set to release on March 7, 2025.
