“Welcome to the End,” a Maren Morris and Jack Antonoff song collaboration, is out now. It is the second track of the All Things Go benefit series, with all proceeds supporting The Ally Coalition (TAC,) a leading nonprofit committed to serving LGBTQ+ youth. The first single, “Jesus and John Wayne,” was released on June 12 by googly eyes, Joy Oladokun, Allison Ponthier.
The production in “Welcome to the End” sounds nostalgic, like a tune you might hear from a music box in a childhood bedroom. The song’s gentle, playful sound is set against lyrics about the difficulties of being a successful artist, including struggles of mental health and throwing up your heart for art.
Maren sings of the parasitic aspects of fame: “we need your word/we need your brain/we can pay you for your pain.” The chorus is the most impactful part of the song: “Oh have you forgotten/this is what you wanted?” referencing the dichotomy that fame is something often longed for, but once achieved brings a new set of challenges.
Morris and Antonoff have worked together in the past, and have most recently collaborated on three songs on Morris’ fourth album, D R E A M S I C L E: “People Still Show Up,” “Grand Bouquet,” and “Holy Smoke,” which dropped this past May.
“Welcome to the End” is out now.
