Five Musicians I Can’t Stop Listening to

Every now and again, my random Spotify searches for new music ends up with great results and I find new artists that I become obsessed with. Being the music dork (I embrace it as being enthusiastic) that I am, I always want to share these talented acts with my friends. I figured there is no better way to promote these musicians than to write a blog post about them!

Alessia Cara: Alessia Cara is a nineteen year old R&B/Pop singer and songwriter hailing from Canada. Despite only having one EP released at the end of August on Def Jam Records, Cara has gained recognition from the likes of many popular artists such as Taylor Swift (who recently invited her onstage at her 1989 Show in Tampa). Her hit song “Here,” is everything I wish I could say at a house party. Her lyrics are full of raw honesty and are truly impressive for such a young age. Her debut album comes out this Friday, November 13th and I can’t wait to listen to its entirety.
Key Tracks: “Here,” “Seventeen”

Leon Bridges: First of all, I am not one to frequently listen to gospel and soul music, nor do I have any knowledge on the music genre itself. However, I am absolutely in love with Leon Bridges. His voice is completely breathtaking and utterly dreamy. This twenty-six year old had his big break when he ran into one of the members of the band White Denim, who later produced a couple of Bridges’ songs on his album. He just had a show in Chicago a few weeks ago and I am so bummed that I missed it! Here’s to hoping that I’ll be able to make it to his show when he returns in March.
Key Tracks: “Coming Home,” “Better Man”

Jr. Jr. : Better known as Dale Earnhardt Jr. Jr., this duo’s newest album has been in my favorites for the past month and a half. They’ve been putting music out since 2010, but their newest release is definitely my favorite thing they have created so far. I find that their style is extremely unique and they have an amazing storytelling ability while still creating upbeat, indie pop music that doesn’t sound too depressing to dance to. They are performing this weekend in Chicago, but I unfortunately won’t be able to make it. Fingers crossed that they will be at Lollapalooza in 2016!
Key Tracks: “Caroline,” “Nothing But Our Love”

HolyChild: Brat Pop. What comes to mind when you hear that phrase? I had never heard of it before I listened to HolyChild, the whacky, free-spirited indie-pop duo from California. Their album “The Shape of Brat Pop to Come,” which was released in June of 2015, is so crazy and carefree that it is almost too much to handle, but just almost. I actually get to see HolyChild perform in just a couple days: they are currently on tour with Ryn Weaver! I can’t wait to see what their live performance is like.  We’ll see how it goes!
Key Tracks: “Running Behind,” “Happy With Me”

Colony House: This trio is comprised of two brothers and a friend who formed the indie-rock band Colony House in 2009. The band’s biggest single, Silhouettes, has gotten them recognized on the alternative charts on iTunes as well as a spot performing on Late Night with Seth Meyers in September of 2014. I really enjoy the sense of ease that comes with their music, yet it’s still upbeat and entertaining. Think of American Authors meets Young the Giant. They just finished up a tour with Coin and I can’t wait to see what they do next: Maybe a slot at Lollapalooza 2016? Can you tell I’m obsessed with guessing festival lineups yet?
Key Tracks: “Silhouettes,” “Waiting for My Time to Come”

There you have it! These are my current most played artists. If you’re interested in hearing more of them, have no fear! I set up a Spotify playlist that you can check out here.
